Dr. Firstenberg is the Chair of Cardiothoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at HealthONE’s The Medical Center of Aurora in Colorado. He specializes in adult thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. Dr. Firstenberg previously served as faculty at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and at The Ohio State University where he was active in research, program development, fellow/resident/student education, and adult cardiac surgery. He is Board Certified in General Surgery and Thoracic/Cardiovascular Surgery.
His thoracic training was at The Ohio State University, with advanced training at The Cleveland Clinic. He has been involved with numerous Institution quality, process improvement, and multi-disciplinary committees. Dr. Firstenberg has also served as the Principle Investigator on Industry and Translational research projects, as well as serving as a University Senator, member of the College of Medicine’s Admissions Committee, Faculty Council, and Assembly. As an active member of the STS, ACC, and AATS, Dr. Firstenberg has participated in Institutional and Extramural leadership and research activities. He has co-authored more than 100 manuscripts, lectured worldwide on ECMO support and program development, and currently serves on the editorial board of several peer-reviewed Journals. He has authored several textbook chapters and edited a textbook on thoracic surgery.
