Dr. Dan is a practicing general surgeon with particular clinical and research interests in minimally invasive and metabolic surgery. He has a distinct passion for surgical education and currently serves as the Director for the Advanced Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship Program at Summa Health System in Akron, OH. He also served as Residency Program Director at Western Reserve Hospital from 2013-2016. Dr. Dan currently serves as the Medical Director of the Bariatric Care Center and the Weight Management Institute, as well as the Chief of the Division of Robotic General Surgery.
Dr. Dan received his medical degree from Northeastern Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). He completed a residency in General Surgery at Michigan State University, where he served as Instructor in Surgery and Chief Surgical Resident. He credits Dr. Richard E. Dean (former chairman and Professor Emeritus) and Dr. Sukamal Saha with instilling the enthusiasm and passion for surgical education and research that have led to the foundation of his career in surgical education.
Following residency, Dr. Dan completed a fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery at The Cleveland Clinic, where he trained under the guidance of Dr. Phillip Schauer and Dr. Bipan Chand. Over the past decade, Dr. Dan has authored a multitude of review manuals, peer- reviewed articles and textbook chapters. He has completed fellowships in Academic Medical Education and in Research Methods. He actively participates as faculty in National Surgery Board Review courses, covering numerous topics including foregut, bariatric, hernia, abdominal wall and minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Dan has published more than 25 peer reviewed articles and textbook chapters on topics in the realm of laparoscopic, gastro-intestinal, abdominal hernia and bariatric surgery. He is extensively involved in the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Society of American Gastro-endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). From 2017-2019, he served as the President of the Ohio and Kentucky Chapter of the ASMBS. He has been a member of various national committees, including access to care, bariatric surgical training and public education committees. He also serves as the ASMBS representative to the Fellowship Council.
